Q:
What is Buck and Wing?
A: Buck and Wing is one of the oldest forms of tap dance, popular between
1860 and 1940. It is characterized by being up on the toes, performed
at
fast tempos, and having a feeling that is "straight" rather
than
"swinging". Wings are a famous Flash step and when done in conjunction
with this up tempo Buck dancing, you get the classic Buck and Wing!
Q:
What is the difference between "straight" and "swinging"?
A: Buy the DVD and check out the informative Extras!
Q:
Aren't wings like really hard to do?
A: Wings are difficult and require patience, and good practice. In this
DVD, Josh shares his teacher's method of wing instruction, with exercises
to take you from fake wings where the risk of injury is low, to the
incredibly difficult five-tap wing which most people will never do.
Q:
Where in the heck did Josh get this idea?
A: Josh learned about Buck and Wing, and Soft Shoe, two classic styles,
from his mentor Joe Stirling. Joe was a performer in Vaudeville, in the
1930's, and learned his Buck and Wing from an Irishman in the
mid-1920's. Joe's system of wing instruction is unique and amazingly
simple in concept.
Q:
Can anyone learn from the DVD?
A: Anyone can enjoy watching and listening to the DVD but it is geared
for
dancers of at least an intermediate level.
Q:
Is there music on the DVD?
A: Paul Arslanian, famous pianist who has collaborated with tap dancers
for
thirty years, plays piano for the demonstrations, as well as laying down
a
couple of practice tracks for students.
Q:
Is the material filmed from behind like in a class?
A: Josh lays out the material from three views in most cases, front, side,
and always including a slow break down of each step from behind.
